Student Spotlight: Berk Jones
For me, college wasn’t just about earning a degree — it was about proving something to myself and the people around me that I was ready to take on this responsibility. My experiences in college have taught me about hard work and dedication, and I’m a stronger person for it.
Growing up in Baton Rouge, attending Louisiana State University was always the plan. I was excited and determined to challenge myself in ways that I had never been — academically and professionally.
While growing up, my parents taught me the importance of discipline, drive, and independence. My lived experiences helped me form the foundation of the college experience I wanted to have. I worked nearly every semester while taking my classes at LSU, and often, it was full-time. Balancing these responsibilities reflected the values instilled in me by my family, and I realized I thrived in this fast-paced environment.

Balancing schoolwork and academics in undergrad taught me the value of working while being in college. When I switched my major from economics to business management, I was able to take courses that directly correlated to my job in supply chain and logistics. Seeing the connection between academics and the real world kept me motivated and ultimately inspired me to return to LSU to pursue my MBA online. This fall, I’ll be starting my graduate school program. And mirroring my undergrad experience, I’ll be pursuing my post grad degree while working full-time.
Between studying, working, and building a network, I learned how to manage multiple priorities and stay focused on my goals. It wasn’t just the hard work that made a difference in my college journey — it was also the people who helped me along the way. Establishing relationships with my professors and colleagues allowed me to grow connections that led me to new opportunities. They showed me what it meant to be a part of a strong community through sharing their networks, offering guidance, and encouraging me to think bigger.
As I look into the future, I want to do the same for others in similar positions. One of my biggest motivations is to one day build a company of my own, not just to lead, but to lift others up. I want to create an environment where teams thrive, people feel empowered, and career opportunities can be discovered. It’s my way of giving back to the community that’s played such a meaningful role in shaping my own journey.
I chose to share my story to inspire college students to seek out meaningful connections and stay driven as they chase their goals. One of the most powerful lessons I’ve learned through my experience in higher education is that college isn’t just something you go through — it’s something you choose.
You have the power to decide how much effort you want to put into it. It’s not always easy, but learning to balance a fraternity, academics, and a full-time job taught me the growth that comes from challenge.
